Kay Krekow, soprano, has been a featured soloist with symphonies, oratorio societies, and opera companies in the United States and Europe. An acclaimed interpreter of the heroines of Puccini, she has sung Anna in Le villi; Fidelia in both the 1889 and 1905 Edgar; both Mimi and Musetta in La boheme; the title role in Tosca (“...colored her voice in daring ways...never compromised the beauty of her appealing voice...” Gazette); Magda in La rondine; and the triumvirate of Suor Angelica, Giorgetta, and Lauretta in Il trittico. She has also appeared as the rarely heard Mimi in Leoncavallo’s La boheme; Leonora in performances of Verdi’s Il trovatore with the Silesian State Opera in the Czech Republic; Beethoven’s Fidelio with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Barry Tuckwell; and Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni with the Maryland Lyric Opera. In partnership with tenor Harry Dunstan, she has appeared with The Frederick Orchestra in programs such as Opera Goes to the Movies and Bella Italia.

Miss Krekow is an active recitalist and has presented programs featuring the poetry and music of women troubadours, cabaret songs of the French Impressionists, and the songs of Samuel Barber. Her recital, Diva’s Song, which features the works of 19th Century Opera Divas, was recently performed for the Maryland RegionalNATS annual conference to critical acclaim.Miss Krekow’s repertoire includes a large number of oratorio works. Most recently, she appeared at the Washington National Cathedral singing the Verdi Requiem under the baton of J. Reilly Lewis. She debuted with the New Dominion Chorale, under the direction of composer, Thomas Beveridge, singing the Poulenc Gloria and the Washington premier of several of the composer’s carol arrangements (“...sang with limpid tone and deep expressiveness...” Washington Post), and returned to sing Verdi’s Requiem with the Chorale, again under the baton of guest conductor, J. Reilly Lewis. She was soprano soloist in the Opera Camerata of Washington’s presentation of Donizetti’s Requiem, marking only the second performance in the United States of this rare work. Other repertoire includes Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem and Hoiby’s For You, O Democracy (Mercersburg Chorus); Honneger’s King David (Fairfax Choral Society); Saint-Saens’ Christmas Oratorio; Handel’s Messiah; Bach’s Magnificat; and both the Pergolesi and the Rossini Stabat Mater, as well as Barber’s Prayers of Kirkegaard and Faure’s Requiem.Miss Krekow was selected as the soprano soloist for the world premier of two works: A Key Tapestry, by Wayne Wold, commissioned for the 250th anniversary of Frederick County, MD, and Nyvaigs by Jennifer Barker, for the Society of Composers 1998 Conference (recorded on CRI). Upcoming engagements include Cio Cio San (Madama Butterfly) and Minnie (La fanciulla del West) for The American Center for Puccini Studies.
